Today was the 63rd annual St Augustine Christmas parade! Just two months ago our beautiful town was flooded by hurricane Matthew ! IT was so amazing and healing for our community to be able to have the parade! And Santa Clause  arrived on a huge Ladder truck!

We are St Augustine Strong!

Hurricane Matthew | St Augustine Photographer

October 20, 2016  •  4 Comments

On October 7 Hurricane Matthew Cat 4 (a category 5 at one time ) made its destructive path up the east coast of Florida (after ripping thru Haiti and the islands). Like MANY in my area we evacuated,I was in tears not knowing what we would return too.  We were so lucky to return home to only two trees on the back of our house and the fence down. The least of my worries!

So many of dear friends lost almost all they owned in up to 6 feet of flooding! My island is in such devastation . But we have such a strong loving community . #staugustinestrong has become our motto!

As many of you know me and my older kids have been doing our best to help friends and many who flooded . Removing precious belongings to the curb. Cleaning debris, removing downed trees, making meals and so on.

This is normally the busiest time of year as families book their holiday sessions. But understandable not on the minds of those that lost their belongings and homes.

Photography has ceased basically which is part of my livelihood as a single mom ( and doula ) I want to give back to those that lost everything or almost everything. I will be offering photo sessions to those that suffered such losses . That I will verify .

It will be DONATION only . I will give my time and love to you . You will receive 1-3 (more depending on family needs) digital images . You can then, when back in your homes or new locations , order beautiful discounted prints from my website!

I am still booking fall sessions for the holidays . I still have special locations that are still in good shape to hold sessions. Sadly my favorite place is still closed .

I also have gift certificates available if you know of anyone you would like to bless with a photo session.

Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but (also) everyone for those of others. Philippians 2:3-4

Copy Cat Artists | St Augustine Photographer | Florida Birth Photographer

October 20, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

I've been debating doing this  specific blog for a while. It concerns all the competition out there, let's  face it there are a lot of photographers in the world and most certainly locally where I live.

We have websites where most everything is for  public view. So people can see and  admire your artistic work.  It can be  flattering and pretty cool when someone mimics your ideas, or  mimics your composition or even goes to specific location that you have shared images of.

And then you'll see an image Facebook or Instagram and think "oh wow that looks kind like some of the photos I've done for someone."

I see a lot of this and I am a good person and assume good in everyone. I don't go and confront people unless I've seen someone point-blank still my images and remove my watermark, that's only happened a handful of times and then they promptly removed it and apologize . Cool.

They didn't know what they were doing, or so they say. Again , I will "assume good intent"

Recently I removed my birth photographer and doula fees from my website because I was doing interviews with potential clients and they would bring it to my attention that oh this person is the same price if you or this person is less than you or someone a would actually show me some the competitors in the area and the prices.

I've been in photography for a long time I've been doing this over half my life. I started out in film and switched to digital in 2009. I use Lightroom and Photoshop like many. However I like to keep images as they appear to my eyes. I will edit and remove what my clients ask, like blemishes .

Birth Photography is a competitive thing right now and it's a very popular thing but it gets really frustrating when you try to do good and assume the best of your competitors when they are bad mouthing you to the public or to people you interviewed and you find out that they have said things about you. That is a sign of true un-professionalism (and I got hired).

I guess my point with all of this is be careful this is the business world and we all know that and I try not to take things personally because in the end I know what I'm doing is my own creative style, I don't need to copy anyone because I have a lot of experience and in this town pretty much the most experience of in birth photography.  I am also a certified birth doula, and that is a huge plus because I know birth! I have been a "volunteer breastfeeding support person " since 1997 , so breastfeeding images are also a long time passion.

But we have to face it in this world there are dishonest people,  a lot of insecure people, a lot of people with passive aggressive behaviors. I've seen it first hand. I read about other photographers across the world that also deal with it. I am on several birth photographer FB groups, and a few share the same stories, and worse!

I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing, do my best like I always have and do my own work and if someone copies my 'art' I guess I need to look at as a compliment that I am better than they are in their eyes.

Be creative. Be genuine .

St John's PAL Football | St Augustine Photographer

September 26, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

This will be a bragging blog tonight! My son is playing St John's PAL football. He played three years ago and has been playing soccer . I will be honest we are not a football family, we are more of a soccer family. But my son did not play soccer this fall because I failed to registered in time for him to be placed on a team.....So PAL Football it is.

My son will 14 in Oct. He is taller than me (and I am not exactly short at 5 foot 11 ) I would guess he is 6 foot 1 or 2.  He wears a size 14 cleat.

The team he is placed with is called the Buccaneers, and they have played a few games with no wins. He is in the red\orange colors and number 66. Tonight my boy scored his very first touchdown! I cringed a LOT. Seeing the many boys it took to bring him down. I prayed a LOT too.

He may have more of a future in football than I prefer, because after the game, the head coach at the local catholic high school approached us . WE had a nice discussion. They want him to come playwith the team......next year . I shared he is homeschooled.... I have much to think about.

Here are some photos from the game...
